The opening tee shot at Wailua is one of the trickier ones on the entire course. The hole initially heads toward the ocean before turning right to follow the shoreline. Trade winds blowing into you and from the left can help turn your shot down the fairway before it reaches the out of bounds on the beach. However, in-course out of bounds also looms on the right to protect players on the ninth hole. The more left you aim, the more reachable the beach becomes; the more you avoid the beach, the more the OB stakes right becomes a factor.

Once in play off the tee, the trade winds may force you to start your second shot closer to the bushes and beach on the left than is comfortable. Bigger hitters can reach this green in two. Fronting bunkers guard the opening to the green, with the right bunker catching many wind-blown approach shots that are overly wary of the beach. This hole has the potential of producing big numbers while yielding its share of birdies.
