The Ocean Course at Hokuala
No. 5 – Par 3
No ground balls allowed at Hokuala’s fifth
Jack Nicklaus is known for designing memorable par-3s, and the short holes at the Ocean Course at Hokuala do nothing to tarnish that reputation. The fifth plays over a mango forest to a large, two-tiered and elevated green that acts almost like an island green. Anything short either disappears into the jungle below or catches one of the large bunkers that sit well below the level of the green.
There is a little room for error right of the green, where the red tees sit tucked into the back corner of the property. There was no other spot to place the forward tees without demanding a long carry, so Nicklaus carved out a place for them behind and to the right of the green to minimize the frustration and lost balls. The result is a challenging little shot.
