Poipu Bay Golf Course
No. 2 – Par 5
Poipu Bay’s 2nd offers an early chance at birdieGet an insider’s tip on how to navigate the gettable par-5 second hole at Poipu Bay Golf Course from golf writer Mike Dauplaise! Image courtesy of Patrick Koenig.
How would you play it?
The second at Poipu Bay is a stronger par-5 than the yardage suggests. Played into the wind with a tee shot slightly uphill, only strong hitters have a chance at reaching the green in two under typical conditions.
The hole bends gradually to the right its entire length. A large bunker and trees guard the inside elbow of the dogleg, but there is plenty of room left into a wide landing area that slopes toward that bunker.
A good tee shot puts you in position to go for the green if conditions allow. Be careful to avoid a cluster of bunkers on the right side leading up the final 80 yards to the green, and trees guard the right side the entire length of the hole. More than a few players have gone bunker-to-bunker here, as another bunker guards the front of the green on that side.
The smart play is a more conservative line up the left side, which opens up the green and leaves a short-iron approach for a good chance at birdie.
