How would you play it?
Go ahead and let it rip off the tee, although keep in mind you’ll likely be laying up on your second shot. A generous landing area features bunkers on either side, with out of bounds left and some room for error on the right.
Once you arrive at your tee shot, you’ll be hard-pressed to concentrate on the task at hand rather than gaze in awe at the beauty behind the green. Hanalei Bay and the mountains of the North Shore frame your target, with the white sand bunkers providing an appealing contrast to the greens and blues all around. This is the first of about a dozen times on the round that you’ll find yourself saying to your partners, “Wow, look at that view!”
While the yardage on the card may look impressive, this hole plays downwind and downhill. The smart play is to lay up on your second shot to avoid the bunkers that pinch the fairway 50 yards short of the green.
This is a good three-shot hole for most players, with a comfortable hybrid second and a short-iron third putting you in position for a birdie. The big hitters may be able to get home in two, but the risk is high. In addition to the sand, thick growth guards the right and invites a lost-ball penalty, and OB follows the hole on the left. Be sure to allow for some rollout on your approach shot, as balls tend to move toward the bay.
